A rare find on the independent label scene this group has material that is really  refreshing from the saturated radio norm. Prepare to be impacted by the album from Lifesavas. The Quannum Projects artist by the same moniker Lifesavas, releases a self titled double sided vinyl; "Lifesavas" on the a-side and b-side "HelloHiHey" both songs are well produced with verbal exercises. However radio may pick up either of these songs for mix show run. Nevertheless the a-side Lifesavas gets the nod for bigger fan appeal, with its jazzy soul sound, neutral radio ready feel and acrobatic flow. www.quannum.com is the place to find more on Lifesavas.

Through a combined triple label collaboration; Banyan Records, 2K Records and EMI Music Distribution, brings Akwid debuting with the album 2002 A.D.  Saturated with hip-hop’s main ingredient; head nodding, raw, but well initiated production, Akwid definitely has some bright spots to talk about. 2000 A.D. is can be defined as a true hip-hop compilation. The rawness combined with the revitalized b-boy attitude with few commercial pick-ups; Starskee and Hutch, Foney and Third Person possible for radio rotation. Akwid in motion go to www.akwid.com for the information.

More from the west coast side of town, Crisis, debuting on the Individual Records Label. Crisis will get the attention of ADD listeners as he's releasing a hot funk bass soaring over a carnival organ song, rightly entitled "West Coast." Mid-Tempo, raw and consistent flow, Crisis includes a shout out version for other areas of the nation (smart move...lol). West Coast is a well thought out piece of material to begin promoting with. Look for Crisis's album Catastrophe, or just visit them via www.individualrecords.com to get further information.

Killa Valley Entertainment‘s latest release comes from Kaoz the Assassin, a West Oakland representative. Entitled The Assassination Vol.1  a bold sentiment, but one, it lives up.  Kaoz the Assassin presenting it all on, maintaining a very balanced number of songs, thuggish, gangster boogie material, radio friendly and video ready songs.  The LP contains 16 songs. The CD possesses enough good material, without skipping too many songs. The standout songs are; Shittin’ on Da World (really that’s a song title), Dirty Deeds, United We Stand (W.C. should have took a feature here for remixes), Monsta Rappin’, Whoridin’, and I’m Ghetto. Kaoz should consider vocally teaming with the likes of Mystikal, M.C. Eiht and W.C. Nonetheless his hard work coupled with a veteran sound. allows this project to pull down a *** of five rating, for all.

Tonedeff, born in Newport News, Virgina and migrated to the New York, Queens area in 1998. The simplest way to define Tonedeff is best described as a hip-hop purist, with a sixties mentality in his music is very innovative. At the age of sixteen he appearred on the Arsenio Hall's show "Future Flava" segment, then briefly on Yosumi Records (Game Over 1 &2), released his enchanced EP, "Hyphen", on "Game Over 2" & Domingo's 'Para Mi Gente other more recent spots on KRS-ONE's "Clear Em Out" from "The Difference Vol.1"(Official Joints), Masta Ace's "Disposable Arts" (JCOR), and DJ JS-1's "Arrogant" (f/ PackFM, Substantial & Rise) all which has generated much anticipation for his debut LP, "Archetype" (THIS PAST summer 2002), also available  “The Monotone Ep”. An unwillingness to compromise his creative _expression the QN5 Music label emerged as an outlet. The current single, “Move in, Ride out” is not only very catchy; it’s his bridge to mainstream audience.

Underground Hip-Hop Review:

Who, What, Why and When...First Tekitha's single You, features an appearance by Ghostface Killah, on the Digital Recordings label. An unorthodox production (by the RZA himself) and vocal combination nonetheless it results in a big record, if not a future successful artist currently making waves. Just for the sake of seeing this artist prosper, a traditional R&B mix should be made.

From the album compilation and TV show, Lyricist Lounge Alumni, Wordsworth surfaces with a double sided single. The A-side, On Your Feet produced by the Beatminerz and B-side, That Way, produced by Kurt Gowdy. Wordsworth, answers the What, Where and How questions by debuting the single on his label, Wordwide Communication which is Distributed by Fat-Beats. Displaying, his charismatic, witty style on some of the gritty but hot, head nodding tracks, he goes delivers as just as well as the freestyle sessions seen on the TV show , so...On Your Feet..

The Undaground Legend LP, Sucka Free Records joined forces with Loud Records to bring us Lil'Flip. Flip's LP more so geared to the North-West and Southern fans, nevertheless, there are sufficient songs, for him to be appreciated, aside from his infectious hooks and having an audible flow. Other tracks which standout on the CD; What I Been Through and I Shoulda Listened. Find him on www.suckafreerecords.com or www.loud.com

Bow Wow Records released the Mac Money LP; Tales of A 'G'. Mac Money brings a unique style, the intensity and diversity on this album. The Tacoma, Washington, dogs are barking louder with Tales Of a ‘G” it is so well rounded and very well produced, try choosing a song. These came up as the best single material and video standouts; Blocc Monstaz, We Run the streets and Slow Down all have the potential to take him into radio rotation. www.bwr2000.com is where the dogs sleep.

Dj Rhythm August 14, 2002 -   Codarclar Enterprises

Now that the aftermath of Rock Steady has passed us this brought and influx of pure hip-hop to the turntables. There were so many new songs being released everyday some good, some not worth mentioning. First up, DnD Records has released another of its well kept secrets, Jack Venom. Displaying his solo ability, "Itz Nuttin" (sorry that the name of the song) easily over a Latin club bumper. Also, smoothly putting the industry on blast because of the one dimensional template artist get locked into & "Juicy Loosey", Venom, now showcases his ability to play friendly with other MCs of a higher caliber featuring Don Parmazhane, Craig-G & QNC. The four MCs transitions are smooth yet rugged and refreshing.

Iron Clad Ghetto Life EP courtesy of Ironclad Entertainment. There were two tracks which breathe life into this venture, "We Ballin’" the barrios sounds surpasses, with disrespect Pun and Joe remix, for all you Latin hip-hop lovers this is doubly endorsed for its salsa influenced chorus line. Also "We at War" makes the cut for its savvy mix-show appeal. www.ironcladent.com

Straight out of The Bronx a trio; Kato, Marc Dowe, Gona claiming the moniker of Official Pham, makes a debut on Avatar Records. Simply revamping the Mid-West, Southern Fried style down to the production and flavoring it with New York State of mind. The song  I Need A.. , which will see definite strip club play and certainly a female response, makes for successful radio request, bounce and nod your way to the site. Hit up www.AvatarRecords.com for further inquiries.

Dope House Records, gets two of their four singles in the door. South Park Mexican has radio ready funk single "High So High" and the b-side that may seep eastward with infectious hook "Wiggy". From The Album The 3rd Wish, To Rock The World,  Second Dog House artist Rasheed with his double sided project "Mac God" b/w "Passion". Passion is the b-side, but easily gets the radio nod for its overall production quality. For contact www.dopehouserecords.com or feedback to spm@dopehouserecords.com are the places.

The Consumers Research and Development Label, releases another Single Minded Pros effort. Accompanied by some other street and underground heavyweights on this project; Pacewon on "You Know It's Like That", Profound delivers on "How That Sound" and most definitely a bonus by C-Rayz Walz, Breez Evah Flowing & J.U.I.C.E. "Who's F---in' With This". Pace sets the tone  clearly, with a flow that’s tight and very grave over what can be called the freestyle/cypher beat for the next year. www.singlemindedpros.com lets you get in on the action.

Yes!! the North West Ridaz has come up, with a little something for all regions to ride to. Tacoma Washington, Bow Wow Records, a triple threat release, Mac Money "Just Dippin'" there’s much more diversity to his abilities, this is only a sample. Mr.Dog, "My Knoccs" featuring E-40 & The MossieGhetto Politics the Album and Playboy Bleek with "Bucc’Em".  Playboy Bleek’s about to give Fabulous a little run for his lyrics, (..my bad, for his money). This coming year the dogs from the North West will bark the loudest and www.bwr2000.com is where you can find them.

Underground Hip-Hop Review:

Here it is, dropping another Music Shop listing on the site for those interested in the new and brightest! First off Brooklyn's at it again fresh off the release of the Sound Bombin' III album, the Cocoa Brovaz, the official single release titled "Spit Again" b/w "Tools Of The Trade". A package of metaphors in conjunction with, a multi-level layered guitar chords, thick bass-line,  the reggae flavor chorus by Dawn Penn backed by Nyoka and Geraldine Nicholas rounds out Spit Again, to the street credible, head nodder Tools Of The Trade, both songs boast quality production, you choose on this one, nothing less, simply banging!! . The current project with Rawkus, Distributed by MCA...is slated for October 15, 2002 release.  During the release of the Sound Bombin' III at HMV's, Tek states "...but we have a Boot Camp album coming out on Down Duck, and then another BTU album (Buck-Town USA) we might be rockin' on Duck-Down...We have three albums realistically that about to drop...it's crazy baby!!, just trying, trying to get up in the cracks and crevices like roaches." Better yet go to www.duckdown.com get your look see on.

N.Y. to go to Milwaukee WI, abbreviated to B.C.U.  Brothers Coming Up, serves an album with something for everyone, throw in a little Miami bass sounds, some R&B vocals settled over hip-hop, funk, southern bounce, to round it off. What You Want From Me (that's a song), Party Tonite and Act On It are all songs definitely worth listening to. The singles and more so video material comes from Huh Ma,  its has a catchy call and response hook, making it easy for radio to swallow,  a toss up for a b-side goes to So Sure feat. Precious and Lonely Aggression feat. Pen-A-Gun. Either of these songs can easily back up an a-side or stand alone as one. The diversity of music, talent group effort and quality of production warrants the purchase. Serious calls contact  414-442-0647 for bookings and information.

Arrakis Records brings Philly Hip-Hop Community to the fore-front, with an album The Spice, seventeen solo artist and four groups are featured on the eighteen tracks compilation. The Spice is correct, Briz, Pack FM! Kleva!! Reef aka Lost Cauze!!! Breez Evah Flowin'!!!! (sorry I started ranting there) so many flavas, you begin to salivate. Good, edgy and experimental production, that compliments the street savvy, introspective and sometimes conscious lyrics to the vocal penmanship and artistry of The Spice. www.arrakisrecords.com is the place to check for more on Philly's artist.

Detonator Records out of Boston leaks Breez Evah Flowin's EP. Nine tracks, seven songs which includes a live freestyle, ( so the math is now six full songs, OK ). Breez has two songs that can actuall receive radio rotation, I give the nods to Step This Way it being clean enough to enter mix format and Pro-Files. Well produced, friendly enough for radio, nonetheless street credible to satisfy his followers The Blaze battle winner, did not forget you ( his followers ), with Grain, Between The Seams and Saki that's definite ode to his hip-hop beginnings.

Crossing into Canadian territory, Warparty Entertainment brings to you a 6'4" artist Big Slim, released his own heat. The confidently entitled EP Heat, delivers five slices to choose from. Which three songs gets him the nod to move into contention as a bona-fide artist. Slim's own better than average production, compliments his bold, baritone voice which makes it all cohesive, on the latin riddims, with his memorable hooks, on Then You A Hoe. The smooth story-line transitions on Mama and the heartfelt statements on the off-beat, gully track of Just Be You and www.bigslim.cjb.net is where you'll find more of Big Slim.

Surrender Records jointly with HangMen 3, just dropped a single that will immediately go to club classic, Made Men featuring Swizz Beatz and Glaze NY on the vocals, sick!! I say! Just combine Busta's energy with ( and you hear him) that definite track flow from The Benjamins mix it with a louder stabbing horn on the bass-line, and call it The Franklins. Nonetheless the can pull it off and sound very good doing it. hear them via www.made-men.com  or www.benzino.com . Well that's it for now see me in a about two weeks U.W.A.G. Rhythm will deliver.

DJ Rhythm. May 16, 2002

This week I am eager, because I am reviewing albums not just any albums but, Underground mostly that have incredible potential, and that's understating the greatness of the artist,  along with the composition of each album...So let me put it down.

My Q-York Entertainment people, KL, Knowa Lazarus, readies, his album "The Opening Statement" while last touches are being added, the advance CD, boasts four strong tracks, "All In The Mind", "Translations (rm)", "Shadiness" and my personal rewinder, "F--k Them". I can possibly see a video in play for "Translations" intricate lyrics, as he assist you to learn his Asian heritage (dare I say love song). Keeping in mind that no drastic last minute changes will give Knowa a full three scratches for originality and consistnecy, If you need to hear him yourself, checkout www.knowalazarus.com .

Now we go all the way to Alaska to check out Artic Flow Records as they debuts AKREAM, more retro style production, but well balance topics, radio ready material and street savy tracks such as, "Take it Back", "Way Too Cold" (also the album title), and "Breathe On You" ...Everthing was done by their inhouse crew, this rating may seem low but it picks up a 2 3/4 scratches...I can be wrong, you tell me www.arcticflowrecords.com can assist in giving you a sneak peek.
